Early Saturday, reports emerged of significant explosions shaking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, though it did not immediately offer further details.
Context: Rising Tensions and Recent Developments
This event takes place against a background of severely escalated strains in the region. Major developments preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
