Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
